A must on the racing calendar
The Deloitte Challenge was the brain child of Race Director Barry Holland. Maximising the potential of the magnificent Dolphin Coast scenery along the M4 coastal highway, The Deloitte Marathon Challenge from Ballito to Durban became a reality in 2015. The Half Marathon Challenge starts at the Sibaya Casino and follows the M4 to the finish at the iconic Moses Mahbida Stadium. In 2016 The ten-k Challenge starting at the La Lucia Mall was added to the offering. The 5km Fun Run Challenge starts at the stadium and runs along the Durban Promenade. The Challenges are completed with the 40km Cycle Ride from Ballito to Durban. The Deloitte challenge enjoys full road closure of the M4 Coastal highway and is becoming one of the premium races in South Africa.
DELOITTE CHALLENGE 2018 RACE REVIEW:
By any measure the 2018 Deloitte Challenge was an overwhelming success and must be considered as the premier Marathon event in Kwazulu Natal. Held on Sunday 18 March, the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km and 40km Cycle courses enjoyed full road closure of the M4 Coastal highway with spectacular ocean views and the dramatic sweep of the Durban beach front as the back drop to the finish at the Amphitheatre on the Durban Promenade.
Having been sponsored by Deloitte KZN since inception 4 years ago, the race has grown in stature with 8500 participants in 2018 making the most of the great weather, superb water points and high-quality race shirts and medals as give aways. With over R90 000 in prize money on offer, the various Challenges were hotly contested and the Half Marathon featurds Deloitte Challenge guest runner and 2017 Comrades winner Bongmusa Mthembu coming home in 5th place using the race as preparation for Two Oceans.
The race date moved this year having previously been scheduled at the beginning of May. Race Director Barry Holland commented “This was a deliberate move to bring the event back into the heart of marathon season and to offer the runners an ideal Comrades Marathon qualifier. The feedback has been very positive and mid-March will be the future slot for the race” Holland commented further on the exceptional water points that are one of the outstanding features of the race. “We believe we set the standard for top race water points and apart from Comrades the Deloitte Challenge can boast the best points in the country. To ensure we maintain the very professional level of water point organisation and hype, we put up a substantial prize for the best overall point and the best point in the first half. This year the teams went all out and there were some stunning points, but best overall point went to Remax Dolphin Coast and the first-half prize to Living Earth”
Look out for the 2019 edition of this event and be sure to be part of it. There is something for the whole family with the event including a 5km Fun Run along the Promenade and the Cycle race for the non-runners.
